debian stretch - broken gaming :(

zykotick9 at

I have no idea what to do... I have been using Debian since the weekend Squeeze was released. Now, I'm at a crossroads of sorts - and am uncertain how to proceed.

Stretch seems to have some serious issue with graphics. I use one of my machines as a retro-gaming/entertainment box connected to my TV. MAME is a BIG part of that, BUT MAME is unplayable on Stretch (as is OpenArena, just used for testing purposes). Jessie's MAME works fine (but is an OLD & NON-FREE version of MAME) -- at one point during Stretch's development everything was also fine. However, for some time now, my updates from Jessie->Stretch have resulted in this broken MAME/3D graphics situation. I had hoped the final release would have the issue resolved - it doesn't.

The fact that it happened with two very different pieces of hardware - one with Nvidia graphics and others with Intel graphics - with the same result = "unplayable" MAME & OpenArena - is VERY puzzling to me.

Mesa issues?

Don't you have any logs that show a clue?
