KDE 4->5 no upgrade?!?!

zykotick9 at

so i just read there is no migration of KDE from 4->5 (jessie->stretch).... because, i read, there is no migration provided by upstream. while i don't use KDE, i gotta say, this will be my new example/warning for staying away from this software from now on. Evolution broke a data upgrade for me YEARS ago, and I've never returned - add KDE to that list now.

That's not entirely true. First you'd need to clarify what you call "KDE".

There's no migration for the Plasma shell from Plasma 4 to Plasma 5, but the KDE applications migrate configurations when you go from a kdelibs4-based app to a frameworks5-based app.

Quite frankly, not migrating the Plasma shell configuration seems like a really minimal issue to me.

Of course one would need to actually use Plasma to know this. Please don't spread these kinds of rumors if you can't verify them directly ;)

And that's just absolutely unrelated.

Thanks for the clarification. I don't totally understand where KDE/Plasma separate... but good to know, "it's not as bad as it seemed" :)

Very summarized, it would be like this: KDE is a community of people, who create the following things:

  • The KDE Frameworks, a set of libraries and frameworks to build their software, currently at version 5.30.
  • The Plasma Desktop, currently at version 5.9.x, based on KDE Frameworks.
  • The KDE Applications collection, which include things like Dolphin (file manager) or Okular (document viewer). This collection is currently at version 16.12, and includes applications built on top of KDE Frameworks 5, and a few still based on the older KDElibs 4.x. These applications do not require the Plasma Desktop.

Well, that wasn't so summarized in the end xD
